Mathematical Days – Presentation by Rogério Martins
On 11th December, we received as a guest speaker, Professor Rogério Martins, also known for being the author and presenter of the program on SIC Notícias, Isto é Matemática. He was elected by the newspaper “Expresso” as one of the 100 most influential personalities of the year for his work as a mathematician at the helm of the program.
Rogério Martins is a professor and researcher at the Mathematics Department of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Doctorate in Mathematics in the area of Dynamic Systems and Differential Equations.
In the school auditorium, Rogério Martins presented 'The greatest secrets of the world', taking students on a trip through the unknown, asking apparently no one has yet discovered, or what only mother nature knows, revealing some of the greatest secrets in the world ... and mathematics!
He noted that until now, no one has yet found a formula that tells us directly why the chain from a bathtub levitates or why a gomboc (toy) floats in an aquarium; or why it is that when we put two glasses of water in the freezer at the same time, the one which contains the hottest water freezes first.
Mysteries like these were put to our students, with questions that perhaps may lead to the discovery of the answers to these problems.
